6 ESSENTIAL ITEMS FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP TO COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen is renowned for its cool chic and colorful houses. As a first-time visitor, I was incredibly excited about my trip. Copenhagen exceeded all my expectations with its amazing cuisine, stylish atmosphere, and charming cityscape! After spending a weekend in this beautiful city, I reflected on my personal travel experience and compiled advice for future travelers. Here are the 6 essential items you need when visiting Copenhagen:

1. Money

One of the first things to consider when traveling to Copenhagen is your budget. While many cities can be explored on a budget, Copenhagen is not one of them. The simple truth is: Copenhagen is quite expensive! Excluding hotel or travel costs (flight, train, car), everyday expenses can add up quickly. For instance, I paid double for almost everything compared to Germany, from my morning coffee (€8-9) to a glass of wine in the evening (€10-15). While there are guides for visiting Copenhagen on a tight budget, I believe that might limit your experience. Copenhagen's unique attractions and experiences are worth the extra expense.

2. Good Walking Shoes

Exploring Copenhagen on foot is one of the best ways to soak in the city's charm. There are plenty of ways to get around Copenhagen, including renting a bike, taking the Metro, or simply walking. I prefer walking to immerse myself fully in the environment. Despite packing comfortable walking shoes, I was exhausted by the end of each day. However, the experience was worthwhile as I discovered charming cafés, bars, restaurants, and stunning architecture that I might have missed otherwise. So, if the weather is favorable, pack comfortable shoes and enjoy walking around this beautiful city.

3. A Credit Card

When visiting Copenhagen, having a credit card is essential. I didn't exchange any money because paying with credit cards in Copenhagen was very easy. The common ones like Visa and MasterCard are accepted almost everywhere. I even paid for small items like water, coffee, and sandwiches with my card. While some small businesses might not accept credit cards, I didn't encounter any. However, it's always good to ask if you're unsure to be on the safe side.

4. High Expectations for Nordic Cuisine

Copenhagen is a paradise for foodies, especially those who enjoy exquisite Nordic cuisine. Known for its innovative culinary scene, the city is home to world-renowned restaurants like Noma, which holds two Michelin stars. Although we couldn't secure a reservation at Noma, we enjoyed a fantastic meal in the Meatpacking District. Many restaurants here offer course meals at fixed prices, and the one we chose randomly turned out to be one of the best dinners I've ever had. Although we spent around €150-200, it was absolutely worth it. If you appreciate fine dining, Copenhagen's Nordic cuisine will not disappoint.

5. A Warm Jacket and a Scarf

Packing essentials for Copenhagen should always include a warm jacket and a scarf, especially during autumn and winter. I also brought my beloved warm hat from Sézane and didn't regret it once! No matter the season, always pack for unexpected weather changes as it can get very windy. During my autumn visit, it was quite cold, and I was informed that even in summer, it can get cool.

6. Your Camera

Don't forget your camera when visiting Copenhagen! I can't imagine traveling without capturing the beauty of this city. There are numerous beautiful places, Instagram-worthy spots, and scenic sights worth photographing. I particularly adored Nyhavn with its bright-colored townhouses and the elegant 18th-century Rococo mansions. Your camera will help you preserve these memories and share the charm of Copenhagen with others.
